Scientists develop printable lasers

By REBECCA BAKER

AUSTRALIAN AND ITALIAN SCIENTISTS have created a nano-crystal ink that could be used to print cheap TV screens, lights and solar panels.

CSIRO scientist Dr Jacek Jasieniak and colleagues from the University of Melbourne and the University of Padua in Italy developed the inks from semi-conducting crystals called quantum dots, which are about a millionth of a millimetre in diameter.

On this day in history: human genome completion

By REBECCA BAKER
Ten years ago today an announcement was made representing the starting point for a new era of genetic medicine: the mapping of the human genome.
In June 2000, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President Bill Clinton announced the first draft of the human genome had been completed. Due to the rapid advance in technology, the whole project was finished three years later.

Size matters: American Samoa tops ‘globesity’ scale

“ Size matters: American Samoa tops ‘globesity’ scale”

The article discusses people’s diet history and the impact of western imports into countries like Samoa and Kiribati as they have been officially crowned the ‘fattest’ countries in the world. The latest obesity report released by the World Health Organisation has found that 93.5 per cent of American Samoans are overweight or obese. Kiribati came second on the dubious honours list, with 81.5 per cent of inhabitants tipping the scales.

This story is news worthy because of its ‘currency’- health is always a hot topic- but obesity, over the last few years has come into focus, with reports like this becoming more and more common. Globally, there are more than 1 billion overweight adults, at least 300 million of them obese. Australia has been up there with the ‘fattest’ countries. Perhaps now we’re beginning to realise what a serious issue this is considering this turn of events?
