Despite promises that the closure of Mitchell’s Pass in Glenbrook was only temporary, the road is still blocked causing accessibility problems for residents in the Blue Mountains area.
The steep road was closed earlier this year as a result of dangerous rock falls after heavy rain, Mayor, Adam Searle says that the boulders are now blocking the roadway, the largest being approximately two to three tonne in size.
The large fallen rocks have prompted the council to consider that the road is in need of attention, as it conflicts the interest of public safety and arrangements are being made for a geotechnical report to be completed to determine what needs to be done to reopen the road.
The road is often closed during extreme weather conditions and traffic is diverted to Old Bathurst Rd, which is also frequently closed due to accidents and weather.
Old Bathurst road is one of New-South-Wales black spot projects where extra guard rails, rumble bars and other road surface improvements have been made, Mitchell’s Pass is not yet part of this project.

Three months on residents are advised that Mitchell’s Pass, Glenbrook remains closed between Lennox Bridge and Emu Plains.
Mitchell’s Pass was closed as a result of a rock fall that occurred due to heavy rain earlier this year.
A geotechnical assessment of the site has now been completed and the assessment will determine the stability of the rock along the road and identify any risks to road users and residents.
Mayor, Cr Adam Searle has said that the assessment has concluded that the road is not safe to reopen due to the likely occurrence of further rock falls and the major risk this poses to users of the road.
Residents that live on the street are advised by council to use The Great Western Highway as council has said that Mitchell’s Pass will remain closed for an indefinite period.
